Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
Since I was born I'd been around Motorbikes thanks to my dad, at the age of 7 he bought me my first bike, a Suzuki TS 50 ER motocross bike which would be the bike i used to learn how to Ride bikes. From about 7 I regularly attended drag race meets with my dad as he'd been competing for a number of years and still continues to do so. A few bikes later at the age of 12 the ACU (Auto Cycles Union) introduced a Junior Dragbike class in the UK, my dad asked if i would like to have a crack at it and of course the immediate answer was yes. He built me my first race bike over the winter of 2002/2003 and i guess thats where it all began, as one of the first 4 Junior Drag bike racers in the UK.
List your competitive highlights:
Coming 3rd in my first season of Junior Drag bike racing (2003)
Coming 2nd in the Junior Drag bike championship for 3 seasons running (2004, 2005 and 2006)
Having 8 runs on my dads National Association of Supertwins Top Gas bike and getting within 0.4 seconds of his best time. (2007)
Taking the win at the Alternate Energy drag racing event at Santa Pod raceway in the Zero emissions class on my current bike which I built from scratch in 6 weeks. Including recording a time of 14.9 seconds over the quarter mile which is only half a second off the british record for an electric vehicle and is a British record for and electric Motorcycle over the quarter mile.(2009)
Being invited over to the Isle of Man During TT week to take part in the Ramsey Sprint as the only electric drag bike, recording a best time of 9.1 seconds over the 1/8 mile despite power issues and a heavily dragging back brake. (2009)
What are you planning for next season?
Next year i plan to get the British record for an electric vehicle over the quarter mile and further improve my current record. Also we are looking into land speed records for electric vehicles. The biggest plan is to get the bike looking as gnarly as possible over the off season including some chassis modifications, paint and a large amount of work to the body work of the bike to really get it looking sweet.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
To date I would say that my biggest accomplishment has been building the electric bike and taking it to its first win. I built the entire bike including the chassis in 6 weeks which was the most dedicated 6 weeks of my life and for the bike to cross the line was satisfaction enough for me but to take an event win and a record just made it a get achievement for me. As another accomplishment linked to that was taking all the experience i have gained from being around the racing for so long and turning it into a bike that actually works. Oh and making the parents proud by doing all this is one hell of an accomplishment as well.
